Manuel Kamenzin

Manuel Kamenzin is a historian specializing in the Middle Ages, with research interests encompassing medieval prophecy, death and dying, historiography, the history of science, and digital humanities. He obtained his PhD from the University of Heidelberg and is currently working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Ruhr University Bochum. In 2021, he was a Fellow at the International Consortium for Research in the Humanities “Fate, Freedom and Prognostication” at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, and in 2022 at the German Historical Institute in London.

He has published his PhD thesis on ‘The Deaths of the Holy Roman Kings and Emperors (1150-1349)’ (“Die Tode der römisch-deutschen Könige und Kaiser”, 2020) as a monograph, as well as several articles, book reviews and minor contributions. Recently, Manuel Kamenzin co-edited the collected volume ‘History is written by the Defeated. Representation and Interpretation of Military Defeats in Antiquity and the Middle Ages’ (“Geschichte wird von den Besiegten geschrieben. Darstellung und Deutung militärischer Niederlagen in Antike und Mittelalter“). As a Research Fellow, Manuel Kamenzin will be at Stanford from October 2023 to June 2024 to assist Fiona Griffiths and Kathryn Starkey on a research project and to work on his upcoming book on Prophecy and Politics in the late medieval Holy Roman Empire.
